Learn about moth pest appearance, how to prevent and control

What does a moth look like?

Most of the moths that infect indoor spaces are small and there are large ones, with the size varying according to the type of moth. They often have a gray or brownish-brown color, and some have bright colors; with compound eyes and two pairs of wings.

The two main types of moths that infest homes are:

  • Clothes moths: In cupboards, clothes moths stick to fabrics made of fibres such as fur, wool, and silk, or furnishings made of animal-based materials. This pest will chew irregular holes in clothing and leave behind faecal droppings.
  • Stock moths: Stock moths eat dry goods, including grains, nuts, flour, and spices.

Pantry moths often gather around outdoor lighting or windows at night; it can enter through small cracks or when doors and windows are open. The clothes moths avoid light. Both species lay their eggs in secluded, dark areas.

Some types of moths are major agricultural pests and are often a source of food for many other animals, including birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders and even some plants. In homes it is likely to cause problems as you feed on stored food or clothing.

Knowing what attracts moths is the best way to help determine their source. Homeowners who find moths in kitchens can look for the moths inside stored foods or hidden in the crevices inside the pantry.

When larvae are found, inspect and remove any infected products to prevent the pest from spreading. If you notice holes in clothes, check cabinets and storage boxes for clothing moth activity.

Vacuuming to remove mites, dry cleaning or washing and drying infested clothes, avoiding overcrowding in cabinets and checking clothes periodically for damage are among the preferred ways to help control fabric pests.

To prevent moths that may be present in pantry, use a vacuum cleaner inside the pantry to keep things clean. Store products, especially legumes, nuts and flour, in airtight containers, and make sure to consume the old first so that the materials do not accumulate.
